Alex Grayson is a new-to-me author and the blurb for her newly released standalone was more than enough to pique my interest and delve into the unknown. My curiosity paid off because Whispered Prayers of a Girl is a heartrending story that had my heart clenching in my chest more than once and brought a tear (or two...or more) to my eye. The blurb almost ensures that the the story will have it's fair share of angst--widow with two young children, one clearly broken by the death of her father, leading to her no longer speaking unless it's to relay whispered prayers and pleas. Then there is a solitary figure marred by scars--both those seen and unseen--and knows how loss can break you all too well. When all four meet, lives will be changed and love could live once again.I'm going to give you one suggestion: have a tissue on hand. This was quite an emotional read, and it was downright difficult not to wonder what I would have done had I been in the shoes of the four essential characters of this story. I know what it's like to lose a loved one. The pain and devastation varies, depending on what your relationship may have been. Imagine if it were your parent or your partner or your child? Alex, Gwendolyn, Kelsey and Daniel each mourn in their own way, and while some may appear to have bounced back better than others does not mean that the loss is no longer felt. I saw bits of myself in every single one of these four main characters.Alex, Gwendolyn, and the two children, Kelsey and Daniel, have experienced great loss in their lives. Alex the two most important people in his life, Gwendolyn her husband, and Kelsey and Daniel their father. Two of them blame themselves for the losses. We're not just talking about broken hearts here; spirits are in tatters, the kind that may never be patched back together again. There were moments where I found it almost difficult to keep reading because it felt as if I was intruding on the overwhelming grief they were still coming to grips with. I kept on since, as the story goes on, the changes that happen within each one is inspiring and gives you hope that if something as devastating as what these four went through can be overcome, what more the far more mundane challenges in our lives. Whispered Prayers of a Girl may have been my first Alex Grayson read, but it won't be my last. Five stars! ♥ I don't know what was missing but this book didn't deliver for me. The story was good and the characters were all likable. For a change I didn't find the heroine annoying. But I didn't have the response or get all the 'feels' that other readers have mentioned. I just wasn't moved, quite possibly because the mood of most of the story was too dark. Granted, I love angsty love stories, love the tortured hero and the push and pull between strong protagonists. But a little humour or lightness needs to be woven in to break the monotony, especially with the load of grief these characters carried in their respective lives. It all got numbing after a while.The story was well written with only a few minor editing mistakes in present tense, first person dual POV. It's no secret I'm not fond of the latter. Writing in a male voice is a skill for a female writer that takes practice and very few in my experience master it to the point I actually feel like it's a man narrating the story. This writer is almost there, but not quite. Alexander's pain was believable, but when the narration switched to his POV it took me out of the story. His voice was too descriptive and detailed. Men don't think/speak that way. Many times a scene was narrated twice, once by Gwen and then by him and I just didn't need that. I don't always want to hear the hero's viewpoint. I feel like a story with these themes is more compelling if a little mystery surrounds a tortured character like Alexander and all his thoughts and feelings aren't revealed throughout. At the most, a couple of random chapters would suffice.What really took me out of the story, however, were the sex scenes. I'm not against them and think a good romance needs them. I also feel like less is more and while there wasn't a lot of sex in this story, the scenes were long. I've become desensitised to sex scenes of late and find them quite boring, but the reason I skipped the ones in this book was the use a word descriptive of part of the female anatomy. It begins with a 'p' and few words fill me with revulsion more than that one. I don't mind sex, I don't mind cursing. I'm not prudish. But dear lord, that disgusting word! Another that is almost as bad is 'c*m', which isn't even a word. These words dumb down a serious writer, just saying. It isn't necessary to skim the gutter. What little I read in the sex scenes was too descriptive of things I didn't need to read about. As a result, the scenes were a huge strike against what had up to that point been a tastefully written story.I waited for this book to be released because I really wanted to read it after seeing the synopsis. It sounded so like my kind of story. It's a shame I didn't love it. This is the second time I've spent money on a book by this writer because of the blurb, and the second time I've been disappointed in the result. There won't be a third time.Even though I wasn't fond of the book, the issues with it were mine. It's not terrible and I wouldn't tell anyone not to read it.3 stars.
